Your Body, Your Canvas

Egypt has been on its way towards social progression for years and years now thanks to globalisation and the internet, but one thing that is still not fully accepted and normalised among most social classes here is tattoos.

To some, tattoos are a permanent mistake that one has to live with forever but, to others, they are a form of art and self-expression that helps them in their voyage through life.

Let me Introduce you to Farrah AbouelSaadat; a 27 y/o applied arts graduate and the artist behind a tattoo and piercing studio in New Cairo known as TheTatCat. Farrah has always had a passion for painting, sketching and anything generally artsy.

Farrah's journey into being a tattoo artist began at a young age where she was obsessed with tattoos and loved watching videos about them on the internet. When asked about her motivation she said,
"to me, the human body feels like a beautiful canvas to place my art on."

Since tattoo studios are not that common in Egypt, Farrah faced a bit of difficulty opening up TheTatCat, and though some people judge her when they find out that she is a tattoo artist, some are very interested in her field and even discuss their tattoo plans and fears with her. However, although the community does not discriminate against female tattoo artists, they still hold more prejudice towards females with tattoos than they do towards males with tattoos. Nevertheless, she could have faced much criticism for taking on a career path that some people in Egypt may consider it frowned upon, but she doesn't.
"I try to keep my circles non-judgemental," she says.

When asked about her feelings towards her first tattoo experience, Farrah said that, after overcoming her initial fear of the unknown, she was so excited that she was finally getting her first tattoo.
"It was much easier than I have expected, I loved how it looked and was so happy I finally did it."
As for the experience of drawing her first tattoo, it was a thrilling adventure as she had drawn her first tattoo ever on her own body, but as much of a thrilling experience it had been, it was still one hell of a challenge to her.

And if you are still scared of getting your first tattoo, we asked Farrah to give some advice to people like you and she said, "the most common fear I hear all the time is 'what is I regret it later?' I tell them to choose something simple that will always look nice and you will never regret it, plus you can always do a cover-up tattoo or laser removal, in the worst-case scenario." As for females who are considering taking up becoming a tattoo artist, Farrah tells you,
"go for it! I tottally support them and am always keen to help. :)"
