On this day in 1970, Alan Shearer was born in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom. The Englishman is looked upon as one of the best strikers in Premier League history, lifting the trophy once with Blackburn Rovers in the 1994 –95 season. Shearer’s senior footballing career started in 1988 with Southampton, spending 4 years at The Saints and scoring 23 goals in 118 appearances. 1992 was the start of the current Premier League era and the same year in which Shearer moved to the previously mentioned Blackburn Rovers for a then-English record £3.6 million fee where he also spent 4 years and scored 112 goals in 136 appearances. In 1996, The striker then moved to Newcastle United for a then-world record-breaking £15 million fee where he spent 10 years of his footballing career, scoring 148 goals in 303 appearances and retiring at the club in 2006. Shearer achieved 6 Top Scorer awards and 2 PFA Players’ Player of the Year awards. However, Shearer is best known for being the player with the most premier league goals ever (260) which is still a record to this day. Today the retired English striker turns 50, with an incredible career as a player as well as working in punditry in the last few years and most importantly, being a footballing legend.
