Book Review: The Next Person You Meet in Heaven

Nowadays, most novels capture the idea of a couple, that is so in love, facing turbulence in their relationship, and questioning whether they will make it together in the end or not. The Next Person You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom has a smart approach to a partially similar scenario. I would say this novel is a masterpiece, the fruit of Albom’s imagination.

The book’s main character is Annie, she works as a nurse and went through some undeniably harsh days in her childhood. Another important character is Paulo, Annie’s husband. Paulo and Annie used to attend the same school, and it was always destined for them to meet again.

There are other notable characters in the novel, like Annie’s mother, her uncle Dennis, and the atrociously courageous Eddie, who died saving Annie’s life. The accident that Eddie died in resulted in Annie losing her left hand. While hospitalised, she got her hand surgically re-attached, making history.

When Annie and Paulo both decide to get married, their marriage day became a curse; they both got into a horrible accident. From here started the flammable, yet mystical, journey of Annie. While she was on the operating table, and her eyes were closed, her body and soul were somewhere else. The first thing that must have crossed your mind when you read the title -The Next Person You Meet in Heaven- is simply meeting someone in heaven, and while Annie is on her journey in heaven, she meets a couple of people, one of whom is Eddie; the man who saved her life fifteen years ago.

Personally, I loved the book. The way Albom detailed Annie’s journey -and the torrent of emotions I felt while reading the novel- were just fascinating. My favourite part was Annie’s journey itself; those she met, and what she learnt from each of them. I would definitely give this book 5 stars.
