3 Woke TV Shows You Need to Watch Now!

If you've ever applied to sfts, you'll know that we always ask you to fill a form asking you about your opinions on a variety of social issues and topics, and although everyone is entitled to their own opinions, sfts has a message that it stands for and it's that it is a progressive, judgement-free space for people to practice their arts and passions, so we expect our team members to be as progressive and judgement-free as the space we have created for them. But, how can one learn to be woke and progressive, you ask? Well, here are 3 shows that I have personally used to educate myself about current social issues and how to cultivate an open-mind.

1. Good Trouble

Good Trouble is a spin-off of the 2013 (-2018) show The Fosters, it follows Callie and Mariana, two sisters, after they have moved out of their mothers' place and into LA to pursue their dreams and passions. They live in a place called The Coterie, which is a communal living building (with a rooftop pool where a lot of 'steamy scenes' take place *wink wink*) shared with nearly 8 other people. The story, however, does not only revolve around the Foster sisters, but also the other tenants living in The Coterie with them. With every tenant -including the sisters- comes a backstory surrounding issues our current society faces. From the racial/gender pay gap, the flaws in the legal system, body image, depression and LGBTQ+ community issues, to romance and family-related issues, this show covers them all. Besides all of that, the acting is so realistic and honest, by actors who understand the issues, their characters face, that each episode will leave you thinking about and/or reconsidering your opinions regarding every issue as it sheds light on first-hand experiences through the show. Good Trouble is not just a TV show, it is the sad reality a lot of us are living expressed by people who fight for the rights of all of us on- and off-screen! Not to mention, the Good Trouble and Freeform Instagram account post IGTV videos where the actors breakdown and give solutions to the social issues the episodes tackle, so make sure to check Good Trouble and their Instagram account, too!

2. The Bold Type

Another masterpiece from Freeform, The Bold Type is probably my fave TV show to date! It follows three friends, Jane, Kat and Sutton, as they cultivate the fashion world and their love lives. The three of them work at Scarlet Magazine; Jane as a writer, Kat as head of social media and Sutton as an assistant in the fashion department. The show follows their career journeys as they go up the hierarchy and make a name for themselves in their fields under the mentorship of Jacqueline, the editor-in-chief of Scarlet whom I personally consider a role model. Jacqueline doesn’t only help them with their careers but, also, with problems they face in their personal lives and has been an inspiration to everyone in the show and the watchers as the story goes! This show sheds light on all the problems with the fashion industry and how it affects our society while also staying raw and true to themselves as they take these issues head-on with class and total professionalism! From racism and immigration issues in the US, to family and LGBTQ+ problems, this show makes sure to show them in their truest form and how to overcome similar issues in our daily lives. All in all, this show is simply a masterpiece and def worth your time!

3. Euphoria

Not gonna lie, I still have not finished watching Euphoria but, from what I’ve watched so far, this show definitely deserves to be on this list! Euphoria mainly discusses a really sensitive topic; drug-abuse. To this day, a lot of people still don’t seem to understand how big of an issue addiction is and how difficult it is for people to get out of that loop. The worst assumption I have heard so far is the victim-blaming statement, “it’s the addict’s choice to get addicted so it’s their fault,” and Euphoria shows us how shallow of an assumption this is. Other than that, it sheds light on the journey of Rue, the main character, as she fights her way through addiction and tries to become clean. Nevertheless, this show discusses other issues such as LGBTQ+ rights, the dark side of online dating apps, toxic masculinity, parental emotional/mental/psychological abuse and much more! So if you want a show that’s a breath-of-fresh-air yet progressive, make sure to check out Euphoria asap!
