Memology #101

Memes. Memes. Memes everywhere. Nobody really knows where it started or how it happened, but we are here to take you on a trip through memology (the science of memes).

We all think the word meme is a meaningless word that we use to refer to templates or facebook comics, but it is NOT. The word meme comes from a greek origin. Meme is the abbreviated version of "mimema" (which means "something imitated") combined with the word gene. This combination is used to describe something that is transmitted from a culture to another through imitation and not genes. Memes are spread through 3 methods. SPREAD. COPY. ADAPT.Which also happens to be a way of spreading culture.

Memes are a way of expressing cultures. You can know what is happening in a certain country through memes (espically dark humor). Which someway compares to how historians study crafts to acknowledge the streets' reaction to certain historical events. In the future, historians will study memes to understand people's outlook on certain topics and decisions taken in countrys. Memes come from different cultures and backgrounds which sometimes make it harder for people (from different countries) to understand and that is what made some people come up with the term "meme culture".

Memes are not only an easy way to highlight shared feelings, emotions, or knowledge but also are used in the work environment. Did you know that meme marketing is actually a thing?! Meme marketing is the art of making use of social media trends and comics to fulfil marketing campaigns goals. Some movies even use memes spreading to market their movies and sometimes it can backfire by the meme becoming a trend and people sharing it without even knowing the source.

Memes are not as simple as we think they are, they are indications to so many things and could teach people a thousand years from now about how we lived and what we went through. Even though we say the word memology as a joke but memes could actually become a science!
