Netflix's Sex Education Review

Sex Education is so much more than what the title says. It really tackled the topics of sexual assault, harassment, asexuality, pansexuality (which I didn’t even know existed). It also talked about bisexuality, homophobia, anxiety, bullying, toxic masculinity, slut-shaming, and much more. So it really is practically sex-ed, but with humor, love, drama, a good story-line, and amazingly well-written characters. Even those who are not interested in the content that the show delivers can still enjoy watching the beautiful relationships between the show’s characters and the unique overall atmosphere of the show.

It’s also never judgemental about anyone’s sexuality or desires. It instead teaches us that it’s okay to feel the way you do and to be confused. In a way, it kind of teaches us how to deal with those emotions. Also, it shows how the idea of sex affects worldwide teenagers socially and mentally.

It was made in the UK, so it doesn’t have that American teen drama aura that we all got tired of. The tone is great, and it could be really funny at times. It’s extremely light-hearted even though it deals with serious subjects and very effective drama and character arcs. The characters are something that make the show extremely unique. I can’t stress enough how much the writers made the characters exceptionally detailed. Moreover, added countless layers to each and every one of them. They’re all fun to watch. Each character is different in their own way thanks to the writers and the cast. All of them are relatable to some extent, and I mean ALL of them, it’s like they’re based on real-life human beings with a romantic twist. I really can write an essay on each character. The beautiful relationship between two certain characters is what makes it all work, definitely the highlight of the show and it’s the main thing that people love so much, including me, as they have some great chemistry and dialogue together.

The show is properly directed, which is one of the most important things to me about a TV show that I personally appreciate so much. Like I mentioned in my review of Euphoria, Sex Education is also one of the few shows that has it’s own style and personality, that if you take any shot from it that is out of context, you would know it’s from this show. So kudos to the crew, because not many showrunners and creators have the imagination and capability to pull something like that. Now back to Sex Education: the show is visually stunning and pleasing to look at. The colors are gorgeous, just beautiful cinematography. The soundtrack is addictive and fits with the show. It has a 90’s feel. The music chosen for each scene really adds something to it.

The plot is smart, and it’s great. Like I mentioned before the show deals with heavy topics but it’s filled with humor and romance and handled in a funny and light-hearted atmosphere, it’s just overall a feel-good show.

Absolutely adore this show, though I still don’t know how to feel about season 2’s ending. Felt sloppy and lazily written, to be honest, could’ve been way better. There was a certain character introduced in season 2 that was pointless and was just present to make the ending work. But all in all, one of the most heartfelt shows I’ve ever seen and I highly recommend it. It’s not for everyone though, but anyone who feels comfortable with its content should definitely watch it. 9/10. Patiently waiting for season 3!
